The Modern Life x Raz Fresco Interview

Finally Its Here, The Biggest On The Blog Yet, The Modern Life vs Raz Fresco.

Normally when I find new talent across the web, their age normally ranges from 18 - 28, and I understand their views from a young adult's perspective. But I actually ran across in this gem in the summer of 2010, and his name is Raz fresco hailing from Canada. Through the homie P.Blackk from Ohio I found great quality in this artist that's only a few weeks younger than me. With his release of Welcome to the bakers club, (which contained massive production from Raz,) not only did it catch on to my teams ears, it persuaded one of the dopest DJs in this sector to work with him, which is DJ Holiday. From Knowing about Raz being featured on World Star Hip Hop twice, it only lead to him coming to the US to drop some more heat for his next tape, "Laced Up" presented by The Commission and DJ Holiday. Just as Planned, The Tape Was a Major Success to Broaden His Fan base and be noticed by major league blogs like Hip Hop at Lunch and brought him to open up for the Smokers Club Tour that included Mac Miller, Curren$y, Big KRIT and Smoke DZA. With Many Fans in Anticipation, I Actually Got A Chance to Talk to Raz About his project "MCMXCV" Presented By DJ Don Cannon. So I Give You The Indie Watch Inductee of 2010, Raz Fresco

What's Good G, How's Life?

Great, just working on new things, couple moves lined up. New project with Don Cannon about to drop so I'm anticipating the reaction it's gonna get.

Nice, Nice. Specifically When did you know for a fact that you this business was your calling? Why ?

I've always known I wanted to do music. I never had a back up plan and at times I had to make up fake career paths I plan to go down to get people off my case. But it's always been music though. I personally think it's a natural thing and my reasons for doing music are deeply rooted in my personality.

When did you start falling in love with music and how did it happen?

When I was really young, I can't specifically recall the first time I was motivated to do rap but as long as I can remember I loved rap. Before I began writing in the 1st / 2nd grade I used to rap along with my favorite rappers. The first album I ever got was Lil Waynes "The Block Is Hot".

Name Five songs that inspires your taste in music

I'll just say the 5 most influential to me as an artist. "Keys Open Doors" by The Clipse. "Can't Tell Me Nothing" off of Graduation. "Black Mags" by The Cool Kids. "It ain't hard to tell" by Nas (and the whole illmatic album) and "Ice Water" from Raekwon (that whole album is crazy)

So how did you come up with the name Raz Fresco ?

My first name is Rasquiz, so Raz is the short form but that's to short so I added Fresco to the end cuz it sounds cool.

When did you start producing beats and what drew your attention to produce your own music ?

I started producing in the 7th grade because my friend put me up on fruity loops. This other producer had told me around that time the advantages of producing your own shit and how much artist have to pay for beats so I decided to make my own and save myself from the hassle of finding production.

What are the gifts and curses coming from the Toronto music scene ?

There's less opportunities for exposure then other major US cities with large lists of prominent hip hop figures from the area. But that's kind of like a gift in the sense that it filters out a lot of stuff and forces artist to come with harder music in order to be recognized.

After the premiere tape, "Welcome to the Bakers Club, How Did DJ Holiday and The Commission hear about you?

We were cool before the release of that. Holiday did the intro.

Dope, With That Being Said, How Did You Feel When You Worked With Him on "Laced Up"?

I feel Laced Up was a great display of the potential that I have to become a great artist. That tape has a lot of dope songs on it.

Laced Up Gave you Alot of buzz, that put you in the position that you're in right now, It lead to you opening up for The Smokers Club Tour, Producing For Mac Miller and French Montana, and becoming a name mentioned on popular blogs. How did you feel throughout that whole process?

It's nice to see good reactions because as an artist that's a big part of why your making music. You make it to be great and loved. But Laced Up was one project thats part of a larger picture so I'm just focused on accomplishing my bigger goals. I don't let all that stuff get to my head because then you start to get comfortable and slack off. So I don't get comfortable with where I'm at. Ever.

Like I stated before, many fans are anticipating for this project, "MCMXCV" what made you think of this title and why did you stuck with it?

The project itself is the beginning of my journey to become one of the greats. Just like how it's my birth year and beginning of my life since I was born in 1995. it's metaphoric of a start.

Select some of the songs off of the project that are your personal favorites and why?

I love them all. I'd give u half the tracklisting by answering this. The whole thing is great.

After MCMXCV, What's in the near future?

Continuing to grow and develop as an artist and person. Also, me and Prime Toronto plan to shoot more videos for songs off the tape. Other than that, I can't read the future so I can't say.

Finally, Whats your mission in this business and how do you want to be remembered?
Simple. To be one of the greatest ever.

Well thanks for your time, just Remember living out your dreams is living the modern life.
